Bomarzo’s sacred grove
Visit the world’s first theme park! Bomarzo’s sacred grove is commonly called the Park of Monsters for the strange and mysterious sculptures scattered throughout the gardens. Originally built by an Orsini prince in 1552, as a gift to his wife, the gardens were not laid out in the standard Italian renaissance style and their true purpose is still unclear even today. Instead, this magical place is decorated mythological creatures, like dragons, the three-headed dog, Cerberus, guardian of the gates of underworld and an Ogre with an open mouth large enough to sit inside.
Civita di Bagnoregio
After your visit to Bomarzo’s sacred grove, our trip continues to the nearby and fascinating village of Civita di Bagnoreggio. This small town, perched on top of a plateau and accessible only by a footbridge, is also referred to as the “Dying Village”. Civita di Bagnoreggio’s history dates back as far as 2500 yrs. ago, when it was an Etruscan settlement that controlled the trade routes in the valley of the Tiber River. Later, it was a Roman colony and in the middle ages, it hosted a Saint. Due to frequent landslides and erosion, Civita di Bagnoreggio has been abandoned sistematically by its inhabitants, who have left behind for us to visit, a village frozen in time.
Lunch will be offered in the only “Trattoria” of Bagnoreggio and if the weather allows it, will be served outside “Al Fresco”. The local red wine of the “Tuscia” will always be present!
Orvieto and St.Patrick’s Well
Our day trip concludes in the charming city of Orvieto. A leisurely stroll through the narrow picturesque alleyways, will lead you to the beautiful Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta, a masterpiece of gothic architecture. See for yourself why the Duomo of Orvieto is considered one of the most fascinating churches in Italy. From there you will descend down into St. Patrick’s well that was built on the perimeter of the ancient city. Built by Antonio da Sangallo the younger, it provided Orvieto with fresh water in case of a city siege; two spiral staircases that never intersect dive down to over 173 ft. (53 m) into the reservoir. Legend has it that the well has never run dry in 500 years!
